Back to Basics – Straws, Stripes and Sustainable Solutions

Thursday, 16 August 2018 10:51:09 AM Australia/Sydney

Straws are fun, convenient and offer an easy way to make your smoothie or juice gain a festive feeling! However, it’s important to consider the environmental costs — which makes paper straws a great alternative to their plastic counterparts.

Indeed, mass plastic use is a huge problem that contributes massive amounts to landfill and has a negative impact on ocean eco-systems. In this context, plastic straws are increasingly seen as a symbol of an unnecessary convenience with a big impact.

While straws are yet to make it to the banned list in Australia lobby groups like The Last Straw continue to put pressure on the government to do so, and most Australian states have banned single-use, lightweight plastic bags from major retailers, leaving New South Wales the only state without a ban . Echoing this trend Starbucks and McDonald's have both announced plans to phase out plastic straws in Australia by 2020, and most recently, Sydney Opera House and Solotel Group's Sydney Opera Bar have joined the #SydneyDoesntSuck campaign to cut-down on plastic straw use alongside other iconic Sydney venues such as the International Convention Centre and Museum of Contemporary Art.

Here at Timeco, we love to produce sustainable alternatives — especially while embracing fun colours and playful designs! Our new Greenmark Paper Straws are made from FSC-certified, sustainably-sourced paper, offering an eco-friendly, stylish and functional alternative to plastic.

The straws are available in 3 sizes (standard, cocktail and jumbo) and a variety of colours / stripes.
